After some debate, I decided that we're going with a Christmas wreath, rather than a tree. Our apartment is pretty cozy (read: small), so a full-sized tree certainly didn't make sense. And even a small tree would be a bit too appealing for a certain little boy who likes to touch (and pull and throw and eat) everything he can get his hands on!
So for now, a holiday wreath it is. Plenty for the two of us, as we lead up to the holiday festivities at my parents' house. Their tree has always been my true Christmas tree, I don't see that changing anytime soon...

We too have downsized and instead of a big tree we have this small one sitting on a coffee table and also no outside stuff like we used to do. Just took too much energy & we lost interest in overdoing.
